The ocean contains a plethora of aquatic creatures. Some of the most prominent critters which scour the reef are the hardshelled crabs. Crabs can be found in all stratae of the worlds oceans, as well as some freshwater habitats. Species range from the iconic king crab (Paralithodes californiensis) known for it’s excellent flavor, to crabs with completely alien features such as the arrow crab (Stenorhynchus seticornis).
The emerald crab (Mithrax sculptus) is a fan favorite of the aquarium hobby. Known for its tendancy to eat the nuisance bubble algae, this scavenger spends its days prowling the live rock for uneaten food and debris. The emerald crab, like all crabs, is an opportunistic feeder, and though aggression is rarely scene in the emerald crab, predatory actions are not unheard of. Provide this crab with plenty of meaty foods such as the Piscine Energetics mysis shrimp every couple of days to make certain that they do not look at your fish or zooanthid patches as a source of easy, albiet expensive, food.
The arrow crab (Stenorhynchus seticornis) is one of our store favorites. With its long lanky legs and alien profile, this specialty, omnivorous crab can be found in sub aquatic caverns and outcroppings in the Atlantic Ocean; particularly the Caribbean Sea. The arrow crab is used primarily to control bristle worms in the reef tank. Once again, be sure to keep the arrow crab well fed as they have a tendency to eat small invertebrates if left unfed for a few days.
