Triggerfish

Triggerfish are a saltwater semi-aggressive aquarium fish that live on the reefs in the warm waters of the Indo-Pacific oceans. They are best recognized by their sleek angular body with brush strokes of color ranging from the Black and Blue of the Niger Trigger (Odonus niger) to striking yellow and black in the king of the reef, the Titan Trigger

(Balistoides viridescens). The former being the smallest variety of Triggerfish and the latter being the largest of the species. Its Triangular body serves a very important purpose for the Triggerfish. In situations where the Triggerfish is being attacked by a larger predator, it will erect its two dorsal fins to wedge itself in the reefs infrastructure barring the would-be predator what it would assume to be an easy meal – allowing the Triggerfish to live to fight another day.

Of the upwards of 40 species found in the hobby regularly the two most common are also arguably the most beautiful, that being the previously mentioned Niger Trigger with its matted black/blue coloration and mesmerizingly unique fin movements. As well as the Humu Humu Triggerfish; bold lines of black blue and yellow over a tan body reminiscent of a Picasso painting. Both of these fish, though gorgeous in appearance, can be semi aggressive to more timid fish and do well when stocked with other fish of similar size.
