newletterCold weather is on it’s way, are your fish ready? We have Aqueon Pro heaters to keep your fish nice and warm, along with a full line of test kits to ensure the health of your tank.

For those who aren’t quite ready to let go of summer, we have some “Real Reef Rock,” a very environmentally friendly live rock for your reef tank.

Finally our fish of the month is the Peppermint Tetra, a very peaceful, colorful tetra we often call the HY-511 tetra.

sustainable-reef-keeping-made-easy-pictureThis month we have Real Reef Rock in place of the Tukani live rock we often carry. Real Reef Rock is a cultured live rock. This means that no rock was removed from a natural ecosystem.  Not only is it environmentally friendly, but it was produced for aquariums. Real Reef Rock has the perfect size and shape for reef building and is covered in desirable coraline giving it a attractive purple color.  This rock was grown in a green houses and is bio active, reducing the risk of unwanted pests or hitch hikers.  Good for fish only or reef tanks, Real Reef Rock is a limited time product.

With school starting it is a good time to think about testing. In this case, testing water chemistry! Thankfully, we offer a wide range of API test kits, from basic kits, like ammonia and nitrate, to more advanced kits, such as phosphate.

As tanks become more established, water testing feels less important. But remember, the pH is likely to go down as nitrification happens. Regularly test your tank’s pH to eliminate guess work. API’s test kits offer an easy, affordable and accurate way to test your fish’s water.

You may recall us mentioning the Aqueon Pro Heat last year. After a year of use, we can still say that this is the most reliable and trustworthy heater we have ever offered. They have a limited lifetime warranty and so far we have had zero defects.

Older heaters had mechanical thermostats, which can fail in the on position. Aqueon Pro heaters have a highly accurate digital thermostat that do not suffer from this dangerous flaw. There is a red indicator light when heating and green light when it’s at set temperature. These heaters are not made of glass, but instead have a thick shell of plastic, making them shatterproof (perfect for those cichlids who love to rearrange).

hy-511

Fish of the month is Hyphessobrycon bentosi also known as the Candy Cane Tetra or the HY-511 Tetra. These are very attractive schooling fish from the Amazon river basin in Peru. Candy Cane Tetra like to be in groups of at least six and prefer a tank of at least 20 gallons. They are never reported to be aggressive and make great tank mates for fish as small as Neon Tetra or as large as Angelfish. Although scientists have found it difficult to agree on their name, it is easy to agree that HY-511’s are a great addition to any planted community tank.
