Fish of the Month!

The Fire Goby (Nemateleotris magnifica) or Firefish, is a wonderful addition to any reef aquarium. This small fish, maxing out at three inches, is often seen hovering above the rock work in search of food.  They are able to do this due to their swim blatter which allows them to stay hovering in any given location for extended periods of time. They will often hunt in this way until threatened in which they will retreat into the safety of their burrow.

The Fire Goby is incredibly disease resistant and adapts very well to aquarium life, however they are prone to jumping out of the aquarium so it’s recommended to keep the aquarium covered. The fire goby will readily accept many different types of food.

fun fact: The distinctive ray on the dorsal fin is used to wedge themselves
into their burrow, protecting the Fire Goby from predators.
