This May we’d like to honor the often overlooked Betta fish. These fish are known for their beautiful colors, ranging from deep red, to blue, to white. They make ideal gifts for high school graduates because they can be kept in dorm-friendly fish bowls. While many fish require filters to oxygenate the water, betta are labyrinth-breathers and are able to get oxygen directly from the air. They are also easy to care for.
While many people assume that a betta must be kept alone, this is actually a myth. Betta fish can be kept with select community fish, but never with related species, such as gouramis, or fish that nip at long fins. Fish such as, Corydoras, White Cloud, Otocinclus, and Glolight tetra, can be housed in a filtered Betta tank. When properly cared for, betta fish can live for up to three years.
